(I don't use the pearl one, and my reasoning is completely petty- I just don't like how it looks and I'm not going to spend money on an expensive pencil that I know I'm not going to reach for) If I had to pick a single individual pencil it would be the Mitsubishi hi-uni in 2b (either in pencil or in lead holder, I have both) it feels similar to the matte blackwing but just a tad less soft.
(Lead holders are seriously awesome btw) I'll also just sketch in multiple colors of col-erease pencils as a way to throw a bunch of different sketches on a page and still being able to easily differentiate them.įor realistic sketches, or anything where I'm just using graphite only, I like the blackwing set 602, natural and matte. I've also got a 2mm lead holder with blue lead- tbh, I don't remember which blue lead. Unfortunately, that one was a limited edition, so I can't really recommend it. I used prismacolor's col-erase non photo blue for years, but I'm really digging the blackwing one recently. (I don't use them for scanning purposes anymore, but I still feel like I get better, looser, sketches solely because in my mind "I don't have to worry about the blue sketch being bad since it won't scan anyway").
It's purely out of habit more than anything else- I started doing it in middle school because I thought it made me feel all "professional". I usually prefer to do my really loose "idea" sketches and anything comic/cartoon/manga etc. Depends on my mood and what style of sketching.
